memories make for better stories..

without comments

Today was much better.

Got my medications shipped to the store.
We were busy today - lots of
“I’m leaving (tomorrow/this afternoon/now)
so I need this immediately” customers.

Later on, we got a transfer and all the staff
pitched in to help, which was cool.

The new iPod battery functioned quite well -
I was even able to leave it off the charger
last night, which was something I’d never do
with the old iPod.

All I need to do now is to get mom’s gifts,
as well as a housewarming gift for Sam.

which reminds me of a point I once made
of spending money on experiences and not things.

I guess memories make for better stories..

fixed my ipod and found a wallet…

without comments

that pretty much sums up the day.

got my relacement ipod battery for my 3G 20GB iPod
and after much wrangling, replaced the battery.

found someone’s wallet on the way home -
’twas a Drexel student’s
(found that out after 411ing the address on the drivers license, then calling the father)
left it at Creese center for him, don’t know whether or not he got it.

was late this morning due to a credit union run so that I could order
one of my meds (which I was completely out of) for overnight shipping.

still managed to have a positive balance after doing so.

we’ll see how everything goes from here…

Spiral Frog - Ruckus all over again?

without comments

Spiral Frog Music Service Leaps Into Launch:

The music service, which has had its share of business woes recently, cut a deal with Vivendi SA’s Universal Music Group to build its catalog.
Universal opened up its collection, which includes top artists like Gwen Stefani, in return for a cut of advertising and sponsorship revenue.
Selling those little discs must not be working out so well anymore.

Users sign up for free, but must visit the site at least once a month to retain access to their tunes.
You won’t be able to burn discs, but you can transfer the music to portable players.
Just not the iPod. And that’s the catch.—Gregory Mon

Sorry - with all due respect, that’s not the catch -
what the real catch is more of the same nonsense that Ruckus gave us -
DRM’d WMA files, no iPod support, etc

To date, no DRM fix like the DRM fix for Ruckus.

From TGDaily.com:

The service is riddled with DRM copy protection. Users cannot burn the tracks to a CD, nor are they compatible with Apple’s iPod.
The files can be played on a PC, and according to Spiral Frog the tracks are compatible with other various digital music players.
However, each song can only be transfered to two players.

Users are also required to log into their Spiral Frog account at least once a month to keep the licenses to their downloaded songs active.

From Spiral Frog itself:

To get technical, the Download Manager application is implemented as a Microsoft .Net application,
and thus relies on the presence of the Microsoft .Net Framework 1.1 or later to be on your computer.

This comes bundled with Windows Vista and is preinstalled on most modern computers running Windows XP.
However, should your computer for some reason not have .Net Framework,
the set-up program for the SpiralFrog Download Manager will install .Net Framework 1.1 for you.
(You don’t need to know if the .Net Framework is there or not as the set-up program will check this automatically.)

This feature could get annoying quickly:

If you click your browser’s Stop button while downloading a song or video, the Download Manager will continue its job and,
even though the green spiraling status bar stops, your song or video will keep downloading.

Simply refresh the page – or click to go to any other page on the SpiralFrog Web site –

and you’ll see the download process has continued regardless.

And, of course the generalized non-Boot Camped Mac ignorance:

To download songs at the SpiralFrog Web site, you will need to be using
a computer platform that runs either Windows XP or Windows Vista.

You will also need to have Windows Media Player Version 10 or 11 installed on your computer.

The more things change, the more they stay the same

A possible iTunes/iPod workaround for Ruckus?

without comments

Edit: Apparently, Engadget has found another solution, FairUse4WM,
which achieves the same objectives without needing to playback the file.

Note:
This article assumes you have paid for music
that you now wish to play in a non-compatible media player.
It should not be construed to condone file trading and/or copyright infringement.

Ruckus will be coming to Penn in the Fall.

The only problem is that the files are DRM’d .wma or .wmv files,
which willl not be playable by iPods or by any mp3 player
lacking Microsoft’s imprimatur (wait for the irony) “Plays for Sure”.

Fortunately, there are ways to get the music you paid for
onto the iPod or other mp3 player you paid for -
the most popular being recording software,
as discussed in the article below…..

Craig Crossman column for 6/21/2004

CAPTURE ANY SOUND YOUR COMPUTER MAKES

We like to think that we are in control of our own computers
but we really aren’t. We see things on our screen but
we can’t save or print them.

And there are sounds our computers make that we can’t save
so that we can play them back at another time or burn them to a CD.
But fortunately for us, there are some products out there
that give us back at least some of that control.

Most of us are familiar with screen capture utilities that let us take “snapshots” of the entire or any portion of the screen
and either save them to disk or send the image to a printer.

What you may not be so familiar with are two software utilities
that let you do the same basic thing with sound.

Anyone who uses their computers to play live audio streams
using Real One, Windows Media Player and other similar products
knows that there is no easy way to capture the live audio stream
and save it to disk.

In fact, there are many applications that generate some kind of sound
with no facility to capture the audio. Up until recently, the only way to capture the audio was to literally plug in some kind of audio recording device into the speaker outputs.

So let me tell you about two capture programs,
one for the Macintosh, the other for Windows.

Both basically do the same thing.

They let you capture any audio your computer generates
and save it to disk.
