One more small step away from Microsoft…

Wednesday, May 21st, 2008

(BTW, hoosgot info on a way to run Chuzzle or a similar game on a stock Ubuntu install?)

I took one more small step away from Microsoft today -
I installed Ubuntu on my mom’s computer.

I turned out that mom’s computer had blue screened for the umpteenth time on Sunday
just as I was about to try catching up on some sleep.

My mom’s approach to tech support is to read the blue screen’s contents aloud
until I come over and tell her to restart the computer.

Restarting didn’t work.

Live CD didn’t work.

Spent most of the night trying to find the AC adapter
to the Firewire External CD Burner for my aging, yet uncrashing PowerBook.

Found the AC adapter - burned a copy of the Ultimate Boot CD.

Ran the memory diagnostic - epic fail for the memory!

1 day and $70 later, I have a new working Kingston PC2700 1GB DIMM
and a system that boots - kind of…

2 spare hard drives later,
I have Ubuntu installed and ready to go.

While Mom is slightly let down that Chuzzle won’t work
(hence the BTW at the beginning)
she seems to be OK with it.

And I’m OK with having an almost Microsoft free house.

Law of Attraction - My misgivings

Saturday, May 17th, 2008

Was in Borders tonight, committing acts of economic stimulus (i.e. buying stuff),
when a woman asked me about a book (the science of getting rich - which is in the public domain, BTW).

The conversation quickly devolved into a “why don’t you…/yes, but…”
which I had no desire to continue, as I could sense that, if not checked,
she would completely drain me of patience and civility in a matter of minutes.

I referred her to some tome that had something to do with the Law of Attraction
in a way that conveyed my general disdain for the concept, which elicited her
curiousity as to why I wasn’t so keen on it.

The way she phrased her question indicated that her knowledge
began (and ended) with The Secret and didn’t include knowing
Katherine Ponder or any other previous exponents.

Here are reasons for my many misgivings about the Law of Attraction (LOA):

1) Occam’s razor -
(i.e. All other things being equal, the simplest solution is the best.)
There is a simpler explanation for “results” of LOA, especially the
“I perceive more X in my life, therefore I must be manifesting the X” variety.

These results more easily explained by Selective Exposure -
your brain’s gatekeeper process. The “manifesting” is no more that the brain,
after being told that X is now important, no longer screens X out,
thus increasing the amount of times Xis percieved.

Think of sensory input as emails sent to a GMail account where most emails
are archived without ever going to the inbox (your conscious mind).

Think of Selective Exposure as a collection of rules that send certain emails directly to the inbox.

Selective Exposure
(also known as selective attention and selective filtering)
determines what we actually notice
(refers to a process of self filtering)
Perhaps the best name would be selective filtering (The new car effect)

IN order to make sense of the world, we must block from consciousness
most of the stimuli that we encounter.
Perceptual filters do this for us.

Things get through our perceptual filters when they:
* relate to current needs
* are anticipated
* are very different from normal

So what you thought was “manifestation” was really just you creating a mental inbox rule.

2) The one and only problem -

The other problem manifested (pun intended) in the Law of Attraction is the problem
which occurs when more than one practitioner wants to manifest complete posession
of an item of which there is one and only one.

If you pose the question
“All other things being equal, how did one manifest possession of it while the other did not?”
to the person who doesn’t manifest the posession of it,
be prepared to hear a Clintonian level of statement parsing -
“it only appears that I didn’t manifest it”
“can anyone really have exclusive possession of anything?”
and, of course,
“I’m still in the process of manifesting what I originally percieved - i.e. the thing I didn’t get”

3) The problem of evil -
One of the strong appeals of the Law Of Attraction is that, in essence,
you believe yourself to have the Godlike power to manifest everything in your life.

The problem is that if you have this power over your life - it’s a blue plate special -
you get the good, the bad, and the unspeakably evil.

Your million dollar bank account,
your millions in debt,
and your murder.

some will accuse me of intentionally making that last statement
too emotionally inflammatory - and I understand.

I disagree, but I understand.

The point must be made.

Those are my misgivings, let the comments commence!

“You have one year off from your job to write whatever you please. Merry Christmas.”

Monday, April 28th, 2008

That sentence, spoken by Michael Brown
and accompanied by a gift of one year’s expenses,
sparked the creation Harper Lee’s greatest work -
To Kill a Mockingbird. I bring it up today because
she was born 82 years ago on this very day.

I also bring it up because it brings up
some interesting points about doing the One Big Thing -
the work that focuses your gifts, talents and callings.

The first is more of a question -
“even if I got a year’s worth of expenses covered,
would I be able to get the work done?”

I know I’d have problems doing it - it’s not the
shangri-la that it seems to be when viewed
from the vantage point of working a job
just to keep a roof over your head.

It would be a year of no excuses,
where the life work you wanted becomes work.
The job becomes a convenient excuse for
not doing your true work.

Maybe having a job that isn’t your true work,
but is more amenable to your true work is better option.
83 years ago today, T.S. Eliot took a position
at Faber & Faber, leaving his dreary
former position at Lloyd’s Bank.

The problem there is that even sort of true work
still becomes work, and thus a new source
of rationalization and procrastination.

If I had the perfect summarization to offer
on this subject, I would be offering it now.

I would also be a bit more renowned than I
am right now, which is to say that I would be renowned.

So I’m now back where I was before this,
but for these two hundred some-odd words.

Does anyone else have any ideas?

Holy Crap - I’m an influential blogger!

Thursday, April 24th, 2008

It seems that my reconsideration of HitTail, the
decidedly inspiring Web 2.0 long tail writing suggestion tool,

has me becoming an Influential Blogger.

Influential Blogger Reconsiders HitTail

This long tail tool has made me some more money than I normally make
and garnered me some really sweet SERP rankings to boot.

Real Time Referrers and HitTail reconsidered (or why the HitTail tracking code gets put back on the site)

Saturday, April 19th, 2008

I made a post a couple of days ago about Real-TimeReferrers.com
and how it was a good alternative for getting better SERP rank,
especially for the known good keywords actually used in the searches.

After a few days, the situation has changed,
mostly due to my newfound use of Google Analytics.

I’ve returned from my straying to the
SEO-licious SERP-enhancing keyword goodness that is HitTail.

I’ve returned to HitTail for a few compelling reasons.

First reason:
HitTail (the free version) saves more than the last 20 referrals
(unlike Real-TimeReferrers.com), which helps since I’m not always
at the site grabbing referrals as they’re generated.

Second reason:
Being able to export the reports to a .csv file -
not that I do it that much but it’s a great option to have.

The link rating (which shows up in the .csv file) also helps to
assess the link’s SERP ranking. I mostly do manual checks for unusual
search terms to check SERP ratings.

Third reason: The to-do list is just icing on the cake.
It’s great to have something on the site that makes applying
your keyword strategy an on-site option and not offline.
