If Christianity’s so great, then why are there so many churches? [My FAQ1]
I guess that question can best be answered by
asking another set of questions:
If (booze | chicken parm | a cheesesteak | a cheeseburger)
is so great, then why are there so many
(bars | italian restaurants | cheesesteak places | diners)?
You can make the same argument for all these instances:
If cheesesteaks are supposed to be so good,
how come you have Geno’s, Pat’s, and Tony Luke’s?
If they really were good, wouldn’t the only be one cheesesteak place?
If all you want to do is down a few beers or booze it up,
shouldn’t there be just one big bar where everybody comes
from all over the place?
And doesn’t having a bar on each corner prove
that beer and booze can’t possibly be any good?
If all you want is a cheesburger deluxe and a coke,
or chicken parm with pasta and gravy, why isn’t there
just one big diner or one big italian restaurant?
And does having different diners and italian restaurants
make all italian food or all diner fare lousy?
The point being that even in pursuing something simple
where having a single common approach would be optimal,
we humans tend to form our own little subgroups.
Each subgroup behaves differently, but within the overall standard.
The subgroups and variations don’t invalidate the overall standard.
In english:
Having more than one (bar | italian restaurant | cheesesteak place | diner)
doesn’t make (booze | chicken parm | cheesesteaks | cheeseburgers) any less good.
Neither does having more than one kind of church
make Christianity any less good.
