now I know that these procedures save a lot of women
from a fate worse than (and/or including) death.

I have no problem with that.

I just wonder how soon it will make its way to the States
and the Born-Again Virgin people start seeing it as an option.

If nothing else, I can see this as yet another loophole to deal with
for youth groups, especially those not keen on the
True Love Waits/Passion & Purity/I Kissed (Fill in the Blank) Goodbye crowd…
especially in denominations and/or groups where “looking right” is key.

Muslim women learn to fake virginity
In Europe,
culture clash forcing hymen repair, other deceptions

Chastity can exact a painful price from young Muslim women,
forced into lies or surgery to go to the marriage bed as virgins.

Hymen repair, fake virginity certificates and other deceptions,
said to be commonplace in some Muslim countries,
are practiced in France and elsewhere in Europe,
where Muslim girls are more emancipated but still live under rigid codes of family honor.

Such ploys have saved many a young woman from scorn and worse.
But they also clash with the more liberal social mores of France and Europe,
where some decry it as an attack on human rights.

The procedures are legal but shrouded in silence -
“something that passes through nonofficial channels,”
via friends or the Internet, said Dr. Nathan Wrobel.
“There are circuits that lead women to me.”

Wrobel is one of an unknown number of gynecologists in France
who are willing to repair hymens, the membrane usually broken by the first act of sexual intercourse.

He was one of the few doctors willing to talk about it.

Wrobel says women come to him having convinced themselves
that the procedure will somehow reverse the irreversible.
“They tell me, ‘I’ll be a virgin again.
You will make me a virgin,’ which in reality is totally false. … It’s a secret we share.”

DNA - India - Sex workers go smart with cards - Daily News & Analysis

BANGALORE: Under a project facilitated by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation,
about 500 sex workers in Mysore own chip-embedded smart cards,
which when presented during transactions help them get discounts at select shops
and hotels and earn them loyalty points that can be redeemed for discounts on later purchases.

The shopping basket can include provisions, food at restaurants and clothes.

But the card serves another purpose. It has the medical record of the sex worker,
who has to compulsorily get his or her health check up at a clinic once in three months.
The card becomes inactive if the holder fails to do this.

The sex workers will be checked for sexually transmitted diseases (STD)
and treatment provided if necessary.
