My account of Monte Cristo…

Wednesday, May 17th, 2006

Today I finally gave in to curiousity and had a Monte Cristo Sandwich (wikipedia link)
at the Philly Diner.

It is the perfect sandwich for those seeking the best of both diner worlds -
dinner and breakfast.

Ham and turkey on 3 slices of French toast, cut up club sandwich style with
a heaping side of Maple syrup (it was a 2 metformin meal, and worth it)

My Monte Cristo came with french fries, much befitting the Monte Cristo’s French Origin.

Strangely enough, after using liberal amounts of maple syrup,
when I tried putting ketchup on the fries, I found the ketchup to be positively saccherine
and quickly returned to the maple syrup as my condiment of choice.

I’ll save the ketchup for the GardenBurgers.

how long @ half staff?

Wednesday, May 17th, 2006

was taking the 84 bus down State Rd.
and I noticed that various city agencies had
equally various opinions as to how long a
flag should be @ half staff in honor of a fallen policeman.

while the Water Dept. and the Police Academy
still had their flags @ half staff, the Prisons and the Street Dept. had
them back @ full staff.
(well, the Streets Dept. had a really short pole,
and 2 flags, so maybe they just couldn’t do half staff)

I wonder if any set rules exist for how long a flag stays @ half staff.

p.s. just passed a fire station -
they’re still @ half staff.

How The DaVinci Code doesn’t work…

Monday, May 15th, 2006

here’s a take on The DaVinci Code from someone other than the usual suspects -
it’s from HowStuffWorks.com, a site that normally addresses topics like
how fire engines, DSL, GPS and Smartphones work.

If the article seems to be overly nitpicky,
understand that the book (and the film), especially among some devotees,
is passed off as thinly veiled truth….

Link to Article here.

Article excerpt from HowStuffWorks.com

Since its 2003 publication, “The Da Vinci Code” has caused quite a stir.
Since its debut to glowing reviews, it has sold more than 40 million copies in at least 44 languages [ref].
In addition to being a bestseller, it’s sparked a lot of controversy.

It’s a work of fiction, but it presents itself as based in fact,
and many critics have raised questions about whether those facts are accurate.

It’s no secret that the HowStuffWorks staff likes to take things apart and see what makes them tick.
Some of us are also the kind of sticklers who point out science and technology mistakes in TV shows
and movies, much to the chagrin of the people listening.

But when we heard about the controversy surrounding “The Da Vinci Code,”
we couldn’t resist picking it apart.

In this article, you’ll learn what happened when we took a close, hard look
at “The Da Vinci Code” and how it uses science, technology, art and history.

night time….

Wednesday, May 10th, 2006

It’s dark now, and not just because it’s night.

I feel hollowed out, dull and discouraged.
don’t need a manic high, but it would be good to feel better.

strangely enough, I know when it became dark.
it was the way it always is, one customer, one interaction, and then it
snowballs into a mood that lasts until lunch or afterwards.

the way out, or through, is easier said than done.

rant1

Wednesday, May 10th, 2006

the women in my relationships have tended to find me merely useful,
though somewhat charming. In the end, I stay at one remove,
conveniently exchanging moments of usefulness for tokens of affection.

it’s my own way of earning love, an insurance policy against failing to qualify otherwise.

for the longest time I’ve thought is was the curse of my father’s blood in my veins
and a hatred for him so strong that, in my darker moods I believe it to be my duty to
end his cursed bloodline by taking it with me to my grave unperpetuated.

which of course means no real love -
that could lead to fathering children and spreading the plague.

I know all the points made against this,
how thriving is the best vengeance,
how my grandfather was more than a countering influence in my life,
how my family supports me….
it still remains.

the feeling that my sole value to others lies in my usefulness to them.

Someone call Anniemal control…..

Wednesday, May 10th, 2006

was shopping at Franklin Mills this Monday,
where the video screens drove me to this declaration:

as God as my witness, I never want to hear
and/or see the video for Chewing Gum by Annie
(no, not the curly redhead - the vapid whiny voiced euro J-Pop blonde)again.
Ever.

not content to objectify boys lyrically, she objectifies girls with the video footage -
(I’m reminded of the scene in
Purple Rain where Morris Day tells
the members of Appolonia 6 that he needs to see some “asses wigglin’”)

as for the lyrics, I say -
chew gum while you may - ‘cuz age and gravity are a bitch….

bitter? moi?

Edifice chasm revisited…

Wednesday, May 3rd, 2006

had a pseudo David Mamet moment this morning -
thought I’d try my hand @ rewriting the part of the chasm scene where
Chris and Jenny are both on the chasm.

not that it would become actual dialogue in the play,
but I want to get in the habit of getting stuff like this down.

none of us deserve it,
some of us get it -
and then only because we ask.

asking’s the hard part -
we don’t want to ask,
we want to earn it by stacking up
enough stuff to impress God.

it’s never enough and even if it was,
it doesn’t last long enough.

but you asked - and He gave -
nothing gets in the way of that
height, depth, life, death - nothing.

you asked he gave - it’s all paid for -
end of story - you’re forgiven.
everything.

going into next week….

Monday, May 1st, 2006

it’s Tuesday already - 3 days of work,
then 3 days of mereBreath.

got myself a new solar powered watch and a new glucose meter.

luckily the meter’s the same one my mom uses,
and she has more Acensia Autodisc test strips than she uses, so that’s some money saved…

I need to get some sleep, so I’m outta here…
